Campaign for Liberty Iowa Alert: Forced Union Dues

February 12, 2010

Dear Iowan,

DON’T READ THIS IF you think the State of Iowa should force citizens to pay dues or belong to a union.

However, if you think membership and dues to unions should be voluntary for Iowa citizens – then you need to read this NOW.

On Thursday, February 4th, Big Labor's allies in the Iowa House introduced HSB 702 as an attack on Iowa's Right to Work law.  (A Right to Work Law protects the citizens from being forced to join or pay dues to a labor union as a condition of employment).

This bill would effectively repeal Iowa’s Right To Work law for all executive branch employees.

It would also help ensure that:

>>> Workers who don't comply with Big Labor's outrageous demands could be sued by the state.

>>> Under this bill, threats of expensive litigation would be used to force most of Iowa's state employees under Big Labor's power.

This legislation is a cynical effort by some members of the legislature to forcibly take an estimated $5.3 million more from state employees.   It would nearly double union coffers.  (And I know some of the legislators pushing this bill have been assured by the unions that their political supporters would get their share of the money in the form of political contributions!)

HSB 702, or any similar legislation, will further damage Iowa's business climate and economy while increasing taxes to pay for the higher costs of government in the middle of the state's worst budget crisis ever.

This legislation must be stopped.

I urge you to contact your State Representative today and demand that they oppose HSB 702.
